Transgender is a term used to refer to people whose gender identity differs from the sex that they were assigned at birth. Transgender people are of the most misunderstood and vulnerable population within our society.  Though public awareness has increased, the general lack of knowledge has hindered the removal of the stigma that is too often placed on transgender individuals.  The disparities seen in the transgender population are significant. 53% of transgender students have missed school due to physical harassment and 30% have reported employment discrimination.  In most cases these disparities can be reduced by education and acceptance.  It has been shown that transgender people who are in supportive and affirming environments experience no greater level of depression, suicidal ideation and anxiety than that of the general public. Corporations can help create such an environment by adopting nondiscrimination policies and educating their employees.  Many educational institutions have adopted nondiscrimination policies, yet in many cases have not provided any form of education to their staff. Educators, on all levels, who learn about trans issues can impart this knowledge to their peers and students which can significantly reduce bullying. Education is the foundation for supporting our transgender individuals in academia and industry.<br/> <br/>This work seeks to provide (1) An introduction to basic terminology to help equip people with the language in which to discuss transgender issues; (2) Answers to frequently asked questions that everyone should know about and; (3) Insight on creating a safe, inclusive and productive environment for transgender individuals within both academia and industry.<br/>
