Since the industrial revolution, the mass production of products meant for consumer use has continually evolved with a seemingly tug-of-war between innovation and regulation. From the tragedy of thalidomide to mine shaft collapses, no industry has been immune to accidents that have claimed the lives of innocent human beings. Could the cannabis industry be different? This talk focuses on the critical processes leading up to full scale production and sale, commonly referred to as Product Research & Development. Complementing the principles of Quality by Design and Front End Engineering with the Scientific Method, the result is increased product quality, lower risks to patients, and with the appropriate tools, lower costs of production and increased margins. In an industry already subject to increased scrutiny due to numerous factors, how a company approaches the development and scale of mass production of cannabis products destined for human consumption will determine its fate. We will look at how health and safety regulated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Risk Management Tools such as Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP), and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) can be incorporated into the principles of Front End Engineering and Quality by Design to best serve a company’s bottom line and promote safety of its workers and end users. As states exercise their regulatory oversight, increased product testing failures due to inferior delivery apparatus leaching heavy metals into cannabis oils is just the beginning. This talk will cover some of the most common failures that the industry has made and some best practices to prevent one from repeating these mistakes.<br/>
