Our research group focuses on the development of stable catalysts for the conversion of CO2 enriched syngas to long chain hydrocarbon fuels via the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) process. Our previous studies have shown that the activity and product selectivity of Co, Fe, and Ru catalysts are unique and vary depending on the type of catalyst support (i.e silica-SBA-15, alumina or titania). This present study seeks to investigate possible synergistic effects of bimetallic oxides (BMO), i.e: hybrid mesoporous silica-titania (SBA15-TiO2), silica-alumina (SBA15-Al2O3), and titania-alumina (TiO2-Al2O3) support frameworks on FT activity and long-term stability of the catalysts. The methods of preparation and characterization of 10wt% Fe supported on the BMO frameworks that will be presented include TPR, TGA-DSC, SEM-EDX, FTIR, BET. Initial SEM-EDX analysis of 10%Fe/SBA15-TiO2 and 10%Fe/SBA15-Al2O3 revealed a spherical morphology of the particles having an average size of 1.1µm and 6.5µm respectively; while 10%Fe/TiO2-Al2O3 consisted largely of agglomerated amorphous particles. H2-TPR reduction profiles confirmed the presence of Fe2+ and Fe3+ oxidation states in the supports. N2-BET analysis showed a total surface area of 364.4 m2/g for 10%Fe/SBA15-TiO2, 10%Fe/SBA15-Al2O3 ~ 461.6 m2/g and 10%Fe/TiO2-Al2O3 ~110.1 m2/g. The thermal profiles of the catalysts obtained by TGA-DSC showed that the catalysts supports were thermally stable up to 750. The presences of BMO alternating metal oxide bonds were further confirmed using FTIR spectroscopy, The FT activity and stability tests of the catalysts using different temperatures at 1atm with CO2 enriched syngas as feed are currently underway and our findings will be presented.
