Non-aqueous flow batteries are expected to achieve higher energy density due to its broader solvent window than aqueous systems. However, a lack of redox active materials with extremely high or low redox potential limits their current performance. Herein, computation prediction and molecular engineering are used on cyclopropenium-based molecules leading to the development of a series of extremely high potential (1.3 V vs Fc/Fc+) catholyte materials for non-aqueous flow batteries.
