Globally, we are faced with concerns that include developing sustainable resources and alternative sources of energy, addressing climate change, solving public health issues, and supplying enough food and clean water for our ever-increasing population. These problems represent huge challenges, but also provide opportunities that can be solved by using chemistry in a responsible manner. For this reason, it is becoming increasingly important to engage the general public and also inspire future generations of scientists. Martyn Poliakoff does an exceptional job at this! In this talk, I will discuss how Martyn Poliakoff has influenced my career in the sciences, from my PhD research, to research in industry and academia, including the development of a green chemistry course.
