Properly designed liquid-impregnated surfaces can greatly reduce friction between solid surfaces and viscous liquids and can also be designed to significantly inhibit nucleation and adhesion of scale and biofilms. In this work we outline thermodynamic and dynamic models that govern the behavior and slipperiness of liquid-impregnated surfaces. We also their unique ability to reduce water, energy, and product waste in manufacturing, and explore their potential to improve efficiency of transporting water through pipes by preventing scale build-up.
