Securing an early priority date for patent claims of appropriate commercial breadth can be challenging in the more unpredictable arts such as in the chemical and therapeutic technologies. A provisional application can provide access to securing an early priority date while allowing flexibility for patent applicants to retain confidentiality while carrying out further research for inclusion when completing the application. However, priority dates for claims can be impacted by various considerations including entitlement to priority and patent specification disclosure requirements including written description, enablement and best mode. This presentation will compare requirements in Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia (including Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam) in securing priority dates for patent claims in chemical and therapeutic technologies.<br/>
