This workshop will provide an opportunity to interact with the digital resources available open access at the FDR library related to the roles of women like Henrietta S. Klotz, who were influential in the American government’s response to the Holocaust.

The workshop will also include a tutorial on how to use a database and network visualization tool (open access) called nodegoat to track the influence of women like Henrietta Klotz. This will be a forum for participants to share their ideas about the most important issues related to developing a digital database, massive scale digitization of Holocaust-related documents, and creating online exhibits when working with traumatic archival materials and simultaneously trying to tell undertold stories about women in the government. 

Henrietta S. Klotz supervised the organization and indexing of the Morgenthau Diaries, a collection which spans 12 years, 138 cubic feet and 864 volumes. Mrs. Klotz, with the assistance of the Treasury librarian, Isabella Diamond, compiled all of Morgenthau’s correspondence, memos, and transcripts of his conversations into bound volumes. Henrietta not only “organized” (a conclusion often made about women), but she also directly impacted the stance and actions taken by the FDR administration through her relationship with Henry Morgenthau Jr.

This second intro video explains more about how to use the Morgenthau Diaries and the War Refugee Board Papers. The second data set is a prezi converted into a pdf that goes into more depth about how I've used two digital tools (NVivo and nodegoat) to conduct research about Henrietta Klotz, Henry Morgenthau Jr., and the struggle to rescue Jewish children from France from 1943-44.
