Research in the field of Jewish studies is facing a number of new challenges as a result of the digitization processes. In this paper, we focus on the specific domain of digital oral histories of the Holocaust. Following the digital revolution in oral history research, many institutions now provide access to several divergent collections at once. One of the new challenges is thus related to the simultaneous availability of multiple archives, as well as various search engines which apply different methods to browse their content. In this context, our paper aims at providing a methodological and epistemological reflection of the common approach to the qualitative research praxis. We aim to show how “tools” create “data”, how these two notions intertwine in the practical organization of “search” in large digital corpora of audiovisual materials, and how these issues might project onto research design and formulation of research questions.
