When applied to investigate celluloses and cellulose materials, Raman spectroscopy has generated important information in many research areas. In this presentation, the focus is on those aspects that have provided information on cellulose crystallinity and cellulose supramolecular structure. For these purposes, Raman techniques were not only applied but also developed. Some of the investigated materials consisted of native wood cell walls, aspen wood G-layer, cellulose nanomaterials, and ball-milled cellulose. Particular attention was paid to elucidate the differences between never-dried and dried states of aggregation. Additionally, it was found that Raman spectroscopy is well suited for detection and quantitation of cellulose II polymorph.
