More than half of all B.S.-level chemists enter directly into industry after graduation. How are we doing at preparing them for the workforce? Recent employer surveys have highlighted the intrapersonal (strong work ethic; initiative), interpersonal (teamwork; communication), and cognitive (problem-solving; quantitative) skills expect in their newly minted B.S.-level chemists. These surveys sheds light on desirable employee knowledge and attributes: 1) the current chemical methods, techniques, and instrumentation used in industry; 2) attributes or abilities chemical companies desire in newly minted bachelor’s-level chemists; 3) a comparison to current academic training in the United States; and 4) specific intrapersonal and interpersonal skillsets that should be emphasized in the undergraduate curriculum.
