A simple set of comparative experiments has been conducted in the first semester general chemistry laboratory, designed to determine if the viscosity of various oils and their retention in an environment is affected by their containers. Rates of flow were measured over time, and different oils were used to further expand the variables which could be compared. The results, and the implications for teaching the phenomenon, will be presented and discussed.
