The structures and properties of metatitanic acid played an important role on the crystal structure of titanium dioxide, affecting the purity of titanium dioxide. High purity TiO2 was prepared from low concentration industrial titanyl sulfate solution via short Sulfate Process. The effects of pre-adding water volume ratio, aging time and TiO2 concentration on the particle size distribution, crystal size and titanium dioxide content of metatitanic acid were investigated in detail. The pre-adding water volume ratio determined the concentration, quantity and activity of the hydrolysis seeds, affected the integrity of metatitanic acid particles and cell parameters, which had important impacts on the purity of titanium dioxide. The aging time and total titanium dioxide concentration affected the particle size distribution of metatitanic acid and the purity of titanium dioxide. The optimum conditions were that the pre-adding water content was of 60%, the aging time was of 25 min, and the total TiO2 concentration was of 162 g/L, the particle size distribution was narrowest and the grain size was relatively smaller, and the purity of titanium dioxide was the highest, with TiO2 content of 99.99%.
