Society's needs are shifting towards environmentally friendly natural functional materials and them-based catalysts. As functional mesocatalyst supports silicates, aluminosilicates, zeolites, alumina are used. The nature of the support influences the active metal-support interactions and thus setting the resulting active phase structure which includes mixed active metal phase formation and adjusted acidity. The prospective mesoporous material for hydroprocesses catalysts is abundant tubular aluminosilicate (halloysite) nanoclay. These tubules were developed for new metal / ceramic core-shell systems for catalysts, pollutants removal, nanocontainers for protective chemical agents and drug delivery. Due to tubes’ meso-sized morphology, halloysite provides transport channels, excluding thereby mass transfer and diffusion limitations, which is very important for heavy feedstock refining. With mechanical and thermal stability, halloysite nanotubes were used for reinforcement of various silicates and aluminosilicates catalysts and demonstrated as a perfect support component. Halloysite nanotubes were selectively modified inside or outside to tune the acidic or textural properties, as well as an adjustable metal deposition.<br/>We present the design of new core-shell functional materials and catalysts based on halloysite nanotubes, and synthetic structured mesoporous composites for hydroprocesses (aromatics hydrogenation, hydrotreating, catalytic cracking). We show strategies for CoMo sulfides loading into the lumens of halloysite, which protect the active phase from leaching and aggregation enhancing catalysts’ lifetime and stability. We also present mesoporous ruthenium-containing catalysts and introduce a new nano-architectural approach that resulted in nanoreactors with the core of the metallic particles shielded by clay hydrophobized nanotubes with high catalytic activity in hydrogenation of aromatics and remarkable water tolerance.
