Biaryls have come to dominate organic synthesis in part because the methods for Csp2–Csp2 bond formation are superior to those for Csp3–Cspx bond formation. General approaches to more saturated molecules are need and have been a priority in medicinal chemistry for over a decade. A new, promising approach to the challenge of Csp3–Csp2bond formation is the cross-electrophile coupling of aryl and acyl electrophiles with alkyl electrophiles. By avoiding the need for carbon nucleophiles, the substrate pool for bond formation is greatly expanded, yet initial work in the field was limited to organic iodides and bromides. This talk will focus on our recent advances in the use of several different electrophile pools: organic chlorides, sulfonate esters, alkanoic acids, amines, and alcohols. In addition, our current understanding of the mechanisms of these reactions will be discussed.
