The pivot to fully remote teaching at The College of New Jersey presented a unique challenge for the instruction of an introductory analytical chemistry course. With students working from their homes, the focus – particularly for laboratory activities – was shifted away from maximizing accuracy and precision to instead allow students to explore the analytical problem-solving process more holistically. In addition to inquiry-driven experiments utilizing paper-based devices, students had the opportunity to design their own paper-based electrochemical device as part of a multi-week, fully remote course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE). This process was further reinforced with the use of electronic laboratory notebooks and the implementation of literature activities and assessment questions that encouraged robust and data-driven discussions about problem solving, troubleshooting, and what it really means to be an analytical chemist.
