General Chemistry lecture courses at Towson University (TU), a large, urban, public university in the Northeast, are typically taught in person on the main campus. All lecture courses were taught online during the fall 2020 semester in response to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The General Chemistry instructional team adopted the Mastering® Homework tool to support student learning in the general chemistry courses CHEM 131 General Chemistry I and CHEM 132 General Chemistry II. In this presentation, we report upon instructional methodology prior to the COVID-19 pandemic using a traditional in person lecture approach and during the pandemic using a flipped classroom online approach and completion rates of the assigned and graded homework.
