Drinking water is absolutely essential to assure our survival. Unfortunately, drinking water resources are being polluted with a variety of legacy contaminants and contaminants of emerging concern (CEC).To mitigate these problems, research is progressing to develop new, cost-effective and environmentally-friendly technologies, as conventional water purification technologies such as sedimentation, filtration, and chemical or biological degradation are unable to remove effectively some of CECs such as antibiotic, pesticides, pharmaceutical and personal care products, hormones and certain types of bacteria (e.g. Cryptosporidium parvum) efficiently. In this presentation, we will discuss water pollution by CECs and it’s effect, limitations of current technologies in removing CECs, applications of pure and modified graphene oxide (GO) nanomaterials to remove different types of CECs which includes antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes, endocrine disrupting chemicals (pesticides, pharmaceutical, antibiotic, polyfluoroalkyl substances), disinfectant by-products, dioxin, sun-screen or UV filters chemicals, algal toxin and micro plastic from waste water. We believe that graphene oxide nanomaterials with specific physical, chemical, morphological, electrical, mechanical, optical properties can be the excellent candidates for removing CECs efficiently. Finally, limitations associated with graphene oxide nano materials and future trends will be also been discussed.
