Applications of employing synthetic metal nanoparticles as antimicrobial agents have spanned in the scientific community due to the combination of well-known medicinal properties since ancient times and modern developments of nanotechnology. Among them, studying antimicrobial properties of Alumina could be of great interest due to its high abundancy and easy synthesis routes. Eventhough alumina is utilized in food and cosmetic industry, alumina based therapeutics have been scaresly invented mainly due to their lower toxcity. Herein, we elaborate a facile sonication strategy on top-down synthesis of polymer-coated alumina nanoparticles (Al-NPs) to be employed for antibacterial applications. The sonication duration was used as a tool to tune the size of the resulting Al-NPs. It was observed that the Al-NPs-24 and Al-NPs-30 drugs which were obtained adapting to 24 hours and 30 hours of sonication durations respectively, exhibited unprecedented antibacterial efficacy against a broad range of pathogen strains including gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria as well as drug-resistant strains. Our Al-NPs drug showed remarkable ability to overcome drug resistance developed by the mutated silver resistant and ciprofloxacin resistant bacterial strains. Our novel invention would open exciting opportunities for the exploration of new alternatives in modern antimicrobial drug discovery.
