Photoelectrochemical cells (PECs) integrate light collection, charge separation, and catalysis into a monolithic device that parallels photosynthesis in nature. Photoelectrode materials with desirable bandgaps are generally poor catalysts for fuel formation reactions; as result, the integration of electrocatalysts to the photoelectrodes is necessary. The immobilization of homogeneous, or molecular, electrocatalysts presents many synthetic challenges. In order to overcome these challenges, we have been developing a synthetically facile and modular method for chemically modified electrodes. Our methodology, surface characterization, and electron transfer properties of the new interface will be discussed.
