A variety of transition-metal catalyzed carbon dioxide reduction reactions give improved turnover frequencies and numbers in the presence of Lewis acids. For example, many homogeneous catalysts for the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to formate are more active in the presence of Lewis acids. In this presentation, we will describe our work exploring how Lewis acids influence elementary processes related to carbon dioxide utilization. In particular, we will focus on carbon dioxide insertion into metal hydride and alkyl bonds. The profound influence that the nature of the solvent plays on these reactions will be described. Finally, the connections between our stoichiometric studies and the design of improved catalysts and reaction conditions for carbon dioxide reduction will be explained.
