Equity and inclusion in STEM education addresses concerns about gender, race, socioeconomic status, religion, and sexual orientation. Inclusive teaching means that we treat all of our students equitably, which is distinct from equally. We must realize that not all students receive our lessons in the same way and traditional pedagogical methods have not served all students well. Data from a group of large mid-western universities shows the existence of grade penalties for women and minorities in many STEM courses. Active learning improves grades for all students and decreases the achievement gap for underrepresented minorities and first generation college students, particularly in STEM fields. Small-group discussions promote interconnections between students, which can improve the sense of belonging and motivation for marginalized students and those with differing levels of academic preparation. However, we must also be aware of how increased social interactions in an active learning classroom may affect students differently and consciously create environments to give all students opportunities to succeed.
