The properties and reactivity of solid surfaces depend on environmental conditions. For example, in the atmospheric environment, i.e. under ambient conditions of temperature and relative humidity, oxide surfaces contain reactive hydroxyl groups and adsorbed water not unlike, but not exactly like, oxide surfaces in bulk aqueous water. The focus of this talk is on the surface adsorption and surface chemistry of pollutants present in humid air and water with oxide and other solid surfaces. In situ vibrational spectroscopic probes of the chemistry at oxide/humid air and oxide/bulk water interfaces provide insights into the molecular processes that occur on these surfaces.
