There has been an increase in interest of studying heterobimetallic systems due to the potential of synergistically exploiting the unique properties of both. Our work has focused on the electronic characterization of such systems, particularly those containing a late transition metal and an aluminum center. Our laboratory has synthesized derivatives of previously reported late transition metal-aluminum heterobimetallic complexes that contain iridium and rhodium in an effort to systematically ascertain the electronic effect of the aluminum center on the transition metal as a function of ancillary ligands at aluminum and the bridging moiety. In this study, 13 different pyridinemethanolate and oxyquinoline derivatives, derived from Vaska’s complexes were characterized and the electronic effect quantitated. Data collected in this study can be used develop a library of heterobimetallic complexes with predictable electronic properties.
