The phospholipid bilayer of the cellular membrane is a selectively permeable system composed of various phospholipids that regulates what can enter and leave a cell. These phospholipid bilayers undergo interactions that affect the overall state of the membrane when they interact with other compounds. These interactions are observed through the use of various instrumentation techniques which help further understand the effects of these compounds on the cellular membrane and the overall effect on the system that it is associated with. With the surge of users of cannabidiol oil, a cannabinoid that is produced as a byproduct of hemp comes research that investigates the interactions that occur between it and the cellular membrane when introduced into a system. The interactions that occur between cannabidiol and the cellular membrane were analyzed with the use of the Kibron Langmuir Monolayer Trough system to observe and describe the interactions that occur. A noticeable and quantifiable interaction was observed in the spectra when cannabidiol was introduced into the system when observed in association with naturally abundant phospholipids. When studied with cannabidiol, dipalmitoyl phosphocholine (DPPC) experienced an increase in membrane pressure of over 3-fold at certain points of the membrane and dipalmitoyl phosphoethanolamine (DPPE) which experienced unique effects that showed an increase in membrane pressure at low concentrations of cannabidiol and a decrease in pressure at high concentrations. These spectra describe the intermolecular interactions that are occurring within the cellular membrane between the phospholipids in the membrane. Future research to further investigate how cannabidiol affects brain chemistry will involve Langmuir monolayer studies with brain lipid extract which will help to obtain a better understanding of the interactions that occur in a complex phospholipid composition solution.
