A water-soluble melaminium cyanoacetate salt is synthesized by the neutralization reaction of melamine with cyanoacetic acid at a slightly elevated temperature. The salt is found to have interesting supramolecular assembly using extensive hydrogen bonding as revealed by its crystal structure. IR and Raman spectra are recorded, and bands are assigned. Notably, this salt also contributes to the flame retardant properties as proved by flammability test and thermogravimetric analysis and thereby making it an environmentally friendly, effective flame retardant additive for polyurethane foam.
