A variation of the Mannich reaction was investigated using Eschenmoser’s salt and several ketones to synthesize β-keto-amines. The syntheses were investigated for possible adaptation as an undergraduate laboratory experiment. Comparison of a base catalyzed reaction to the published uncatalyzed reaction will be discussed. Products will be characterized by IR and NMR.
