In this talk I will discuss our recent work involving selective and regiodivergent opening of unsymmetrical phenonium ions with chloride ions. These reactions employ simple epoxide starting materials and are enabled by the dual role of SnCl4 and TiCl4 as Lewis acids and chloride source. The chemistry is highly selective, stereospecific, operationally simple, and proceeds in good to excellent yields. Product utility will be discussed.
