In 2017 the Pistoia Alliance launched a precompetitive collaborative initiative to compile laboratory reaction incident information into a freely available community collection known as the Chemical Safety Library. The idea was to compile actual user descriptions of "reactions gone wrong" and near-misses into a database, so the information could be utilized not only as a reference but in automated workflows, such as in electronic notebooks and procurement systems. The community experiment revealed that the community of laboratory scientists had a great interest in and need for such data, while also facing barriers to contributing.. To address such challenges, the Pistoia Alliance partnered with CAS, a Division of the American Chemical Society, to create the next implementation of the CSL, and established an Advisory Panel to oversee submissions and advise on new developments. In this paper the Advisory Panel members will review the history, the learnings, and the future plans for this important community resource.
