In this talk I will discuss new results on the double layer properties of a Pt(111) electrode in contact with non-specifically adsorbing electrolytes. We observe strong deviations from ideal Gouy-Chapman-Stern behavior, also, or especially, at very low electrolyte concentrations. We also find that interfacial interactions have a strong relation with the hydration energies of the anions and cations, even though there is no strong specific (chemi-)sorption. We will discuss a new double-layer model that attempts to rationalize these results.
