As the carbon deposition on the catalyst surface during the dry reforming of methane reaction is a long-standing problem for heterogeneous catalyst system, an attempt has been made in this work which includes an approach with boron-containing catalyst. We examined B-containing Ni, Co, Ni-Co supported ceria-zirconia oxide (Ce0.6Zr0.4O2) catalysts in enhancing the performance of catalysts for the dry reforming of methane reaction using NaBH4 reduction method. For the comparative study, non-boron catalyst (75Ni25Co/ Ce0.6Zr0.4O2) were also synthesized by the traditional incipient wetness impregnation (IWI) method. The supported catalyst was characterized using XRD, H2-TPR, H2-TPD, ICP-OES and XPS. From the characterization results of catalyst there was sufficient evidence for the reduction of the catalyst during synthesis by the NaBH4 reduction method. However, a small peak of NiO and/or CoO were also observed indicating partial reduction of the catalyst. The dry reforming reaction was carried out in a fixed bed reactor (FBR) at a temperature of 6000C and at atmospheric pressure with GHSV 3×105 h-1. The reaction results show that the bimetallic Ni-Co catalyst with ratio 3:1 was highly active compared to other catalysts with the average conversion of CH4 and CO2 was ~14% and 26%. Moreover, the boron-containing catalyst shows a very low decline in conversion compared to the B-containing catalyst. Additionally, the spent catalyst was also characterized to analyze the catalyst deactivation by the Raman spectroscopy and elemental and XRD analysis. The carbon contained in the product for non B catalyst was 3.5 times higher than that of with boron catalyst and a sharp peak of C material was observed for non B catalyst (75Ni25Co/ Ce0.6Zr0.4O2).
