We demonstrate enhanced immobilization of halloysite tubule nanoclay onto hair surfaces of different mammals including agricultural animals (horses, goats), traditional (dogs) and exotic (guinea pigs, capybaras) pets and looking for the features allowing for the coating’s optimization. Deposition of a stable hair coverage with 2-3 micrometer nanoclay layer loaded with drugs allows for sustained delivery. Halloysite clay nanotubes are natural, safe, and biocompatible material, which is abundantly available in tons and was already used for mycotoxin poisoning treatments. Halloysite self- assembles on the hair surface during a short time application of its aqueous colloids resulting in 2-3 µm thick coating. We have investigated the micro/nano topography of halloysite coatings using 3D laser confocal, SEM and AFM. Enhanced animal hair hydrophobicity resulted in more stable nanoclay layer (capybara). The best coating obtained for horse, goat and capybara hair/fur, all having keratin as the main component. Being loaded with drugs, halloysite provides slow 5-10 days release for sustained anti-parasite protection.<br/>Halloysite clay nanotubes act as a carrier for the antilice drug delivery being readily attached to hair. Water insoluble drugs such as permethrin can be encapsulated into the modified clay tube’s lumens followed by its aqueous colloids coating on hair. Ectoparasites like lice and fleas cause harms to the farm animals and home pets causing sore, wounds and skin diseases. Many antiparazite treatments are not effective because are fast removed from hair. The proposed topical hair drug delivery with the attached tubule nanoclay for antilice treatment allows for a sustainable therapeutic treatment.
