Bimetallic nanoparticles are important class of catalysts which are widely utilized in many catalytic applications. Owing to the synergistic effect (electronic and geometric modification) bimetallic catalysts often show distinct catalytic activity compared to the parent metals. This provides an opportunity to engineer new catalytic materials with appreciable activity, selectivity and stability. Noble metal promoted cobalt catalysts are known for Fischer Tropsch reaction. Even though, initial catalytic activity is high for noble metal promoted catalyst due to more number of active sites generation with enhance reducibility. But the deactivation phenomenon is still not understood with the promoted catalyst. Very few reports are available for impregnated Au-Co catalyst on FT (Fischer Tropsch) where the intrinsic activity due to nature of interaction between two metals is still not clear. In the current study we have synthesized Au@Co core-shell bimetallic nanoparticles by colloidal synthesis approach. The focus of the study is to explore the synergistic effect between Au and Co in Au@Co bimetallic catalyst supported on SBA-15 and its effect on Fischer Tropsch reaction. The tuning of core-shell nanoparticles is effectively shown by using surface and bulk characterization techniques. Deactivation of cobalt catalyst is a critical problem in CO hydrogenation (syngas conversion / FTS) and the present study provides the design of a new material which resists the surface cobalt oxide formation, coke formation and gives efficient CO conversion with high stability. Interaction between Au and Co in core-shell nanoparticles with different cobalt shell thickness and its effect on catalytic activity for CO hydrogenation was investigated. Thin shell cobalt catalyst provides more synergistic effect between Au and cobalt compared to thicker shell cobalt and monometallic cobalt catalyst. Bimetallic Au@Co core-shell catalyst provides the altered surface properties which helps to protect the catalyst from deactivation.
