Organoboranes are versatile and serve as buildings blocks in organic transformation. Selective hydroboration of carbonyl compounds using nontoxic base metals gains more interest to access valuable alcohols. In the present study, we describe the synthesis and characterization of nickel {((C6H5)2PCH2C6H4)3}ENiH(Ni-1: E = Si; Ni-2: E = Ge) complexes supported by EP3-type tetradentate ligands. The new complexes were accessed from the reaction between ligands HE(o-C6H5CH2P(C6H5)2)3 and nickel(0) precursors. The solid-state structures of Ni-1 and Ni-2 were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The catalytic activity of the synthesized nickel hydrides was investigated in the hydroboration of aldehydes and ketones in the presence of pinacolborane (HBpin). Excellent conversion, selectivity, and functional group tolerance were achieved.
