The photophysical properties of binuclear platinum(II) complexes are controlled via multiple approaches through the manipulation of the organic ligands and the Pt-Pt distance. Several binuclear platinum(II) complexes with unique photophysical properties and tunable emissions have been developed. However, attaining high photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE) continue to be challenging and of great interest. Here the synthesis and characterization of a series of three binuclear 2,4-difluorophenylpyridine platinum(II) complexes bridged by thiazol-2-thiolate ligands having different bulkiness are reported. The three complexes have a half-lantern structure with short Pt-Pt distances ranging from 2.916 to 2.945 Å. The complexes exhibit metal-metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MMLCT) absorptions between 450-500 nm, as well as strong and stable <sup>3</sup>MMLCT emissions in the orange/red region. The theoretical calculations results confirm the MMLCT nature of the transition. The PLQEs of the new complexes reach near unity in solid state, these values are among the highest ever reported for this type of platinum(II) complexes. These complexes also exhibit excellent chemical and photochemical stability in halogenated solvents making them of great interest for many applications.
