The introduction of a new diphosphine ligand (P2BCy4) containing four pendant dicyclohexylboranes is provided. Together, with the use of nickel, entry to compounds of the type [Ni(P2BCy4)2] has been achieved - complexes with a boron-rich secondary coordination sphere, which shows interesting reactivity in the presence of Lewis bases. This P2BCy4 ligand scaffold is key to achieving a number of transformations using the aforementioned Ni(0) precursor. The results of these studies will be shared and placed in the context of designing new compounds with functionalized secondary coordination spheres as a means to promote cooperative chemical reactivity with small molecule substrates.
