Alkanes are the most abundant chemicals obtained from crude oil and natural gas. In the present chemical industry and synthetic organic chemistry, selective hydroxylation of alkanes (saturated hydrocarbons) is an important chemical process to obtain valuable compounds such as alcohols, which themselves are also precursors for the synthesis of various organic compounds. Thus, the selective alkane hydroxylation has long been one of the most important research objectives in catalytic chemistry. In this talk, efficient catalytic alkane hydroxylation reactions are presented; nickel(II)/peracid system and copper(II)/aldehyde/O<sub>2</sub> system. In both systems, transition-metal/acylperoxide intermediates are suggested to be involved as the key reactive intermediates, from which O–O bond cleavage of the acylperoxide-complex and subsequent C–H bond activation of the substrates take place. These systems are adopted to catalytic oxidation of gaseous alkanes.
