From our planet to dusty disks around stars carbon-bearing materials are ubiquitous components for which  comprehensive  analyses  may  provide  insights  into  their  cosmochemical  evolution  and  the organic chemistry that occurred ahead of life’s origin on the Earth. A lot of effort has been made over the years to develop novel analytical techniques that could reveal the complex chemical composition of terrestrial and extraterrestrial carbon-bearing matter with little to no treatment prior to analysis. The complementarity of high-resolution two-step laser mass spectrometry (HR-L2MS) with time-of-flight  secondary  ion  mass  spectrometry  (TOF-SIMS)  and  micro-Raman  spectroscopy  have  shown great  promises  in  revealing  the  complex  surface  chemical  compositions  of  combustion-generated particles  in  environmental  sciences.  We  now  applied  these  analytical  methods  to  investigate  the composition of the surface of various meteorites types, all classified as carbonaceous chondrites but exhibiting  different  types  of  petrology  (Jbilet  Winselwan  (CM2),  Allende  (CV3),  Murchison  (CM2), Tagish Lake (C2-ung)). We will highlight how building bridges between disciplines (e.g.environmental and planetary sciences) can promote a deeper understanding of the origin of chemical complexity.
