Celiac disease is an inheritable T cell driven disorder of the small intestine that is triggered by gluten, a ubiquitous and nutritionally important protein source in the human diet. Chemical approaches have enabled new insights into the pathogenesis of this widespread but overlooked disease. These insights are also being translated into disease-specific therapeutic approaches. Selected examples of fundamental as well as translational advances based on recent work in our laboratories will be discussed.
