A partial history of the crrystal field splitting and ligand field theory will be provided. I will describe how a foresightful loner, Jim Snyder, and three groups in Firenze, Barcelona, and Ithaca, were led over the years to question some of the basic concepts involved. Eventually, they set out, theory now allowing it, to subvert the accepted. And interpreted the results in different ways. Kyle Lancaster's work provides some of the best experimental evidence for this unusual phenomenon.
