Kinases are one of the largest groups of enzymes in the human body with approximately 538 protein and 20 lipid kinases encoded for by the human genome. They catalyse the transfer of phosphate groups from adenine triphosphate to amino acid residues in enzymes thus triggering allosteric or covalent interactions needed to activate or suppress the activity of enzymes. Protein kinases play a central role in the transduction and transmission of signals required for cells’ growth, apoptosis, DNA repairs or mutations observed during progression or suppression of tumor. Kinase activators or inhibitors can directly bind to protein kinases, alter their phosphorylation states, and ultimately regulate cells’ signalling pathways. We speculate that kinase inhibitors or activators might be found in the fruit of Maytenus dhofarensis, a Celastraceous herb, naturally growing in the southern region of Oman, and locally known as “Serbit”. M. dhofarensis is not a medicinal plant in Omani herbal culture but ethnobotanical information showed that whenever a goat eats the fruits, it falls ill with shivering attacks. By discussing isolation methods, assay results and spectroscopic data, our work on the identification of the phytochemical components of selected extracts of the seed, seed capsule and wigs of the plant can be conveniently presented.
