Natural products remain a prime source for discovery in the pharmaceutical industry. Novel mechanism of action combined with accessing unchartered chemical space are often referenced as unique advantages of such compounds. However, difficult sourcing and limited chemical tractability can negatively influence their potential in drug discovery. As a consequence, scientists have long sought to reduce structural complexity while retaining function and in particular biological activity. In this presentation, recent examples of our research group in this area will be presented. In addition, applications in molecular hybrids will be presented, which enable unusual drug delivery strategies.
