This acute blood lactate response study is designed to analyze how compression and cooling affect muscle metabolism during interval exercise. Lactate is a product of anaerobic glycolysis and increased exercise intensity elevates the speed of glycolysis thus the blood lactate level. The concentration of lactate in the blood is responsible for the “lactic acid burn” feeling in muscles during intense exercise. In this work, we compare blood lactate levels with heart rate and subjective feelings of exertion and burn to evaluate cooling and compression as an effective physical training method. We have found that the average blood lactate level and participant heart rate is slightly higher in the experimental condition in comparison to the control condition. Additionally, the average subjective reports for exertion and burn have been found to be higher in the experimental condition.
