The Garvan-Olin Medal acknowledges accomplishment, leadership, and service to chemistry. This framing mirrors the opportunities available in a career in our nation’s national laboratory system. For those who are drawn to interdisciplinary collaboration and working with others to explore frontier science and tackle the most challenging problems, the laboratories offer varied career paths. Over a span of three decades, my career encompassed the opportunity to both explore the fundamental inorganic and organometallic chemistry of the actinide elements, as well as to learn continuously about new fields and disciplines. It has also been a tremendous privilege to work with teams of dedicated scientists and engineers to find solutions to problems in the national interest. With these opportunities came a responsibility to serve our community, working to ensure that we build a stronger and more inclusive science and technology community for the future. Science, technology, and engineering must play a big role in addressing today’s global challenges; it is time to inspire the next generation of chemists.
