The overarching goal of my research group is to develop synthetic methods for the production of molecular wire candidates that will contribute to the fabrication of small molecule molecular devices using the bottom-up approach. Our synthetic methodology uses the building blocks outlined in Figure 1. These structures were chosen because A and B readily react with amines and phenols; (2) substituted metallocenes have well defined redox couples that are reversible; (3) 4-substituted-2,2’:6,2”-terpyridine ligands (C-E) will complex with metal salts to form highly structured linear materials; and (4) thiol groups strongly interact with gold surfaces to form self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). Preliminary results using building blocks A - E (Figure 1), our research group has been investigating the controlled molecular design of three types of bi- and tri-metallic molecular wire candidates. Details of the synthesis and characterization of these materials will be presented.
