Many neurodegenerative diseases arise due to an imbalance between reactive oxygen species and antioxidant pathways. Innovative strategies are needed for the development of drug candidates that overcome the imbalances that lead to oxidative stress in the brain. To target these challenges, our team has a series of new pyridinophane small molecules that have evolved through rational design to have increasing antioxidant activity and pharamacological behavior with each iteration. The synthesis, characterization, and ability of these small molecules to decrease oxidative stress in a range of models will be described in this presentation. The potent behavior of these pyridinophanes suggest that bigger isn’t necessarily better.
