Lithium ion capacitors (LICs) are energy storage devices integrating the complementary features of both supercapacitors and lithium ion batteries to reach high energy and power densities. A key limitation to this technology is the kinetic imbalance between the Faradaic insertion electrode and capacitive electrode. In this article, the newly developed LICs is composed of the vertically-aligned carbon nanoflakes, which has high specific surface area and high electrical conductivity, and the counter anode is made of metal organic frameworks derived carbonized nickel cobalt oxide with rhombic dodecahedron structure and high specific surface area. Thorough electrochemical characterizations of both electrodes were carried out to confirm the outstanding high-rate capabilities. Benefitted from those unique nanostructures, the newly designed LICs allows rapid electrons and ions transport in the non-aqueous electrolyte. The fully assembled LIC device delivers an energy density of 110.6 Wh kg−1 (at 200 W kg-1) and a power density of 40 kW kg−1 (achieved at 35 Wh kg−1), and a good cycle stability (≈ 87% retention after 11000 cycles) within the voltage range of 0.0−3.8 V.
