The aim of the research is to develop natural binder from modified wood pulp for the replacement of latex binder due to non-biodegradability, and environment and health concern. The pulp fiber was reacted with different types of reactants (CAM, CPA, CAA, CSA) in presence of alkalis in aqueous medium. Further modified pulp fiber was dissolved in water, and then blended with softening and with or without wet strength agent to produce soft and high wet strength natural binder for the applications of nonwoven and textiles. The nonwoven fabrics were produced by regular nonwoven air laid production machine with 2.5% natural binder add on, and 12% latex binder (EVA) add on separately, and then fabric sheets were subjected to testing to determine strength properties and absorbency. The dry strength of 2.5% natural binder treated nonwoven fabric was about two times higher than 12% latex binder treated nonwoven fabric, but the wet strength of 2.5% natural binder treated nonwoven fabric was almost same as 12% latex binder treated nonwoven fabric. The absorbency of natural binder treated nonwoven fabric was about 50% higher than latex binder treated nonwoven fabric. About 6% pigment color (emulsion) was blended with 3% natural binder solution to prepare pigment-natural binder printing paste for textile fabric printing. After printing and cured, the printed fabric was subjected to testing to determine the color fastness to crocking. The color fastness of natural binder treated printed fabric was much better than 12% latex binder treated printed fabric.
