When one considers the development and utility of redox active pi-conjugated molecules, oligomers and polymers with potential applications in electrochromism, charge storage (batteries and supercapacitors), solar cells, and as conducting elements, electron rich heterocycles play a central role. In this, the synthetic chemistry of 3,4-alkylenedioxythiophene (XDOT) and 3,4-alkylenedioxypyrrole (XDOP) monomers is especially important and will be the focus of this presentation. Using a variety of synthetic routes (e.g. transetherification, Mitsunobu, and Hinsberg Condensation approaches), we have developed chemistry to build an extensive set of these functionalized dioxyheterocycles, and multi-ring compounds, as monomers for polymerization. With new monomers in hand, we employ oxidative and metal-mediated polymerization methodologies allowing access to polymers which are solution processable as required for many uses. Going beyond the “synthesize and characterize” approach, materials are designed for specific properties, these properties are fully characterized, and subsequent platform devices are tested as proofs of principle for the utility of the materials.
