An alternative method for counting significant figures has been developed. The new method has only two rules and two steps called strike and count. The new method relies on the absence or presence of the decimal point to assign significance to so-called leading or lagging zeros. The method improves upon current textbook methods that have four or more cumbersome rules. The method also improves upon the most published Box-and-Dot method by eliminating the need to draw several boxes around the digits and remember special case rules. The method supports standard scientific notation practices.
